Unless you're spending hours down there on a daily basis, finding the moisture source in the basement can be difficult. Most basement water intrusion takes the form of gradual seepage that proceeds silently without notice. Nevertheless, its consequences can become very apparent. Toxic mold growth and structural damage top the list, but left unresolved, basement moisture can ruin possessions stored there and make your entire home environment less healthy. Here are some tips for finding the moisture source in the basement:
- Basement moisture often infiltrates through porous concrete walls and floors. Visually inspect both. Look for any obvious damp spots, but also for dry areas that show the fine, white powdery residue of mineral deposits left by seepage after it evaporates.
- If the moisture source remains uncertain, use duct tape to affix a 2-foot square piece of plastic film—a plastic garbage bag works well—to the floor adjacent to an outer basement wall. Tape another piece of similar size to the wall itself. After 24 hours, remove the plastic. If the square of covered wall or floor is darkened or feels damp, or if the underside of the plastic film is moist, you have identified concrete seepage as the probably cause of moisture.
Once the cause is identified, installing a dehumidifier in the basement may help reduce the consequences. A few additional measures may also help to eliminate the source:
- Damp-proofing sealer applied to walls and floor may reduce seepage in the short term.
- Check the landscaping near the home to make sure it's graded to divert rainfall away from the foundation. Also verify that rain gutters are unobstructed and draining properly.
- If groundwater is rising up through the floor, consider installing a sump pump.
