Here are a few things you can do to prevent mold growth in a flooded home:
- The first thing you should do is evaluate the carpeting in your home. Odds are it's pretty much ruined. If you can salvage it, then make sure that it is cleaned, disinfected and dried as soon as possible. Don't reuse the padding; this should be just thrown away.
- Check the insulation to determine if it is wet. It could be wet even if the wallboard seems dry. Insulation that gets wet can remain wet for a long time. Without water removal or proper drying, it can lead to hidden mold forming and growing.
- When cleaning your home, use detergents without phosphates since phosphate residue acts as food for mold. While disinfectants can kill molds, they do not prevent the regrowth of mold.
- Dry your subfloors, wall framing and slabs before you replace you wallboard, insulation and flooring.
- Use a moisture detector to test the content of moisture of your sheathing and studs before you replace the insulation. Wood should have a moisture content below 20 percent before the wall is closed.
- Avoid using vinyl wallpaper as it will keep the inside from drying completely.
