Because home water damage often begins silently and secretly, it's a good idea to locate a water leak while it's still minor. Hidden water leaks cost money in higher water bills. At average rates, a single dripping faucet costs you $10 a month. Even worse, that minor leak may turn major and spawn flooding that requires professional water restoration. Before that happens, here are 9 tips to locate a water leak:
- Watch your water bill. Increases that can't be explained by other causes may indicate a hidden leak.
- Isolate the problem. Observe your water meter when all taps are closed. If activity is noted, turn off all household water at the main valve. If the meter still indicates flow, the leak is between the meter and the house. If meter readings are stable, the leak is in the house.
- Faucet check. Open and close every faucet. Observe the faucet for a persistent drip.
- Inspect under-sink connections. Supply line connections to faucets may loosen and drip. Look for existing dampness or signs of intermittent leakage such as mold and stains.
- Check water heater inlet and outlet pipes for corrosion. Listen for hissing sounds that indicate internal drips reaching the burner.
- Verify toilet shuts off completely after the tank refills. Listen for the toilet turning on and off by itself, indicating a leaky flapper or defective fill valve.
- If you have a pool, watch daily water level evaporation. Anything over 1/2-inch per day may indicate a leak instead.
- Monitor automatic sprinklers for correct on/off timing and make sure connections to the house supply line aren't leaking.
- Unexplained moistness or warm spots in the floor may indicate a leaking pipe inside the foundation slab.
