Whether you've got a runny toilet or a crack in your pipeline, water damage can happen easily in your home or business. If not treated quickly, water leaks can cause major damage to your structure while inflating your water bill.
Fortunately, there are ways to test for water leaks that don't require the removal of walls or your precious garden beds. Prevent water damage by testing for leaks using one or more of the following leak detection systems.
- Passive leak detection systems. These systems are alarms which stand independent of both your water system and your electricity. Upon detection of moisture, they will put off a high-pitched noise to remind you to take action. Because they run on batteries, however, it's recommended that you check your system at least once each year, preferably at the same time you check other alarms in your home.
- Active leak detection systems. Active systems function very similarly to passive ones in that they first detect then provide notice of a leak. Active systems differ, however, in that they have the capacity to turn off the water source until repair has been made. These systems can be further concentrated by using either a single-appliance monitor or a whole-house model.
- Underground systems. Leaks under the ground occur as a result of a busted sprinkler system or storage tank and therefore require their own detection system. For this reason, there are underground leak detection systems which work by testing such things as water vapor, pipeline pressure, ground water and overall water usage.
