Recent storms like Hurricane Katrina have underscored the fact that repercussions from hurricanes can be extreme. Often, one or more storms that prove to be less powerful than predicted can instill a false sense of security in many residents, causing them to be unprepared for the effects of a fully formed hurricane if it does strike. Katrina proved that when certain elements coincide, the repercussions from hurricanes may exceed predictions.
As another hurricane season approaches, here are some of the most dangerous consequences of these seasonal storm events:
- Rainfall. Hurricanes transport enormous amounts of moisture gathered from the ocean. A typical hurricane can dump over 10 inches of rain as it makes landfall. Municipal drainage systems may not be designed to accommodate this extreme volume of water.
- Storm surge. A storm surge is an acutely high tide generated by the hurricane that pushes over beaches and barriers such as levees. The surge may reach 20 feet and extend along segments of coastline up to 100 miles. A storm surge is a greater threat to life and property than high winds present in a hurricane.
- Flooding. In addition to the prime cause of water damage during hurricanes, flooding causes more than half the hurricane-related deaths in the U.S. When floodwaters are fast-moving, just six inches of water can sweep a person away. Flood water only a foot deep will severely damage homes and other structures.
- High winds. Hurricane-force winds greater than 74 miles per hour will damage structures. In addition to primary wind force, debris carried by the wind can also inflict destruction, injury and death. Homes compromised by wind damage are also more vulnerable to damage, often requiring professional water damage services to repair.
